Optic Wave Labs offers the services of its in-house coating facility to the public. We provide standard aluminum , semi-enhanced aluminum, enhanced aluminum, gold and silver coatings.
Our automated deposition system can accommodate telescope mirrors up to 22 inches in diameter.
We coat new mirrors as well as re-coat your existing mirror. (A fee for stripping existing coatings applies) |

Technology
The heart of our coating system is a multi-pocket electron beam source assisted with a veeco ion source to provide Ion Beam Assisted Depostion for superior coating adhesion and brightness.

Before the coating is applied, and during the inital chamber pumping phase, a Glow Discharge Plasma Cleaning is cycle is executed. GDC is a process in which modulated high voltage is used to excite the residual gas atmosphere in the chamber into a high energy plasma state. The resulting plasma scrubs the coating target removing hydrocarbons, water and residual gas molecules adhering to the surface to be coated. The entire inside of the vacuum chamber is also scrubbed of residual gas molecules and water, producing a higher vaccum.
Better vacuum and a cleaner surface result in a brighter, better adhering and more stable coating. |

As the coatings are applied the Veeco ion source ionizes argon atoms and accelerates them into the deposition cloud. The energy from the ionized argon is transferred to the deposition material accelerating it into the target.
The result is a better adhering, brighter and more stable coating. |
| During the coating deposition, the progress is monitored and adjusted in real-time by a high speed deposition controller. The entire system is automated with PLC control sytem that manages pumping, substrate heating, substrate rotation and the deposition cycle. In short, the entire coating cycle is precisely executed by the control system eliminating variabililty and errors by human operators. |

Optical coatings are warranted against defects for a period of 30 days from the date of original invoice.
All coatings have a protective overcoat.
Gold coatings may be overcoated or left bare depending upon customer application.
